The last few days there has been both physical and ideological and attacks on the LGBTQ+ community that reminds us why we celebrate PRIDE month.
The world can be a very unsafe place and there are people who want to make it even less safe. There are people who hate the fact that LGBTQ+ people are brave enough to fight back, to speak up, and show up for each other.
Why do we celebrate June as Pride month? Even though our community has been fighting long before it, June commemorates the Stonewall Riots a pivotal moment where our community and our allies said NO MORE.
We celebrate Pride not because there are parties and parades but because there is an ever growing need for community and to be seen. There are so many people who feel isolated and disconnected. There are those for what ever reason who are not out. We celebrate so they knew that there is a community out there for them, people who are like them who love and accept them for who they are.
It’s a very scary time and and the forces that want to push us back in the closet do seem to be everywhere. But what they don’t want to acknowledge and are so frightened about is, WE ARE NOT GOING BACKWARDS.
I’m asking you this June to fight back in anyway you can.
We’re asking you to fight back in anyway you can. Be your loud and Proud self. Buy from LGBTQ+ owned businesses. Support businesses and organizations that support the community. VOTE. And most importantly be there for each other.
We’re also asking for your support. The LGBT National Help Center runs the national crisis prevention hotlines (listed below) and other online programs that for 30 years been vital connections and life saving community links for those in need. Our hotlines are anonymous and confidential. We speak with people of all ages, all walks of life, anywhere in the US and Canada. In the past six months we have seen a huge rise in incoming calls from those feeling helpless and alone. Your support here can help us continue and even expand our services to those in need. Please consider donating what you can.
Celebrate Pride every day not just June. Together we can help everyone know they belong and are not alone. THANK YOU!
