“Today, the Court, for the first time in its history, grants a business open to the public a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class,” Justice Sonia Sotomayor penned today after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Christian web designer in Colorado who refused to create websites to celebrate same-gender weddings out of religious objections.
It’s a blow to LGBTQ protections to say the least. It can also as Sotomayor states open the door to other discriminations. It can now give some business a federal right to discriminate against the LGBTQIA+ community.
When the door is open to discriminate against one community that door stays open to others as well.
This is a blow, but this does not defeat our community, but reminds us that we MUST all be here for each other, must fight for each other’s rights and voices. Love each other, show each other respect, speak out when you can. VOTE. If you are an individual who has the ability to be heard, have your voice heard. If you aren’t in a space where you can, do the things you can, patronize businesses that support the community, vote for those who fight for the community, lift each other up.
