"The Watermelon Woman" is a 1996 film directed, written, and edited by Cheryl Dunye. The story takes place in Philadelphia during the 1990s and follows the protagonist, Cheryl, played by Dunye herself, a black lesbian filmmaker and her journey to discover more about an actress in black queer film history. The movie has elements of comedy, drama, romance, and an air of mystery as you follow Cheryl through the streets of Philly. The film explores aspects of race, gender, sexuality, and history relating to minority queer populations.
